For collegiate SWE sections, fundraising can be a big part of what we do. For any activity we want to do, trip we want to take, or outreach event we want to hold, we first have to have the money to do it. WE14 is in Los Angeles next year, so if your section needs to fundraise to send people to conference, it’s best to start now! Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Discount cards– An example is shown below. The first step is to ask local businesses to participate. Since it is free for them and can bring in business, many business should be willing to do so. You can sell the cards on campus, to friends, to family, etc. When you purchase a card, you can use it as many times as you want until the card expires. It’s a pretty good deal, and a win for all those involved!
- Corporate sponsorship– Put together a corporate sponsorship packet explaining the details of the arrangement. You can have different levels, depending on the amount of money donated. For example, if a company donates the money to buy food for a general meeting, maybe they can come in and speak to your section. If a company helps pay for your section’s t-shirts, maybe their logo can go somewhere on the back of the shirt.
- Program Development Grants (PDGs)– PDGs are offered by SWE to help your section with an event. You should apply by the first of the month, at least 45 days before your planned event. For example, maybe your section wants to have a business etiquette dinner. You could apply for a PDG to help cover the costs of food and the facility where the dinner is held. - Other ideas- Bake sales, raffles, t-shirts, engineering formals, and many more!
