February Hot Topic: Region Conference

The 2014 Region G conference was a huge success!  Ohio State SWE hosted the conference February 21-23, with the theme “Engineering Around the World.”

The weekend began with a Friday night social hosted by Eaton, complete with a photo booth with props.

Saturday began with breakfast and the joint collegiate and professional meeting.  Region leaders were introduced, senate bills were discussed, and general updates on the region were given.  This meeting ended with presentations from Case Western Reserve and West Virginia University.  Both schools presented great bids to host the 2015 region conference!

Sessions began after the joint meeting.  Some sessions included Climbing the SWE Leadership Ladder, Studying Abroad as an Engineer, SWE After Graduation, LinkedIn, Work Life Balance, and several CLCC modules.  I personally very much enjoyed the session on Relocating for your Career!

The professional meeting and Region Council meeting took place in the morning.  The collegiate meeting took place in the afternoon.  After the collegiate meeting, region leaders held a meet and greet, to interact with members and answer any questions.

During the Networking lunch Colleen Layman, Director of Regions, spoke about the state of SWE.  Also, many members and sections were recognized for membership and charter anniversaries.

Throughout the afternoon, many attendees did some serious networking at the career fair and got profile pictures taken for LinkedIn.

There were various fun activities attendees could participate in after the sessions.  Many went on the tour of the Phoenix Bat Factory.  There was also a chocolate tasting, with a wide variety of different types of chocolate.  I chose to participate in SWE Trivia.  Three teams of five answered questions about SWE, the Olympics, and general knowledge.  Congratulations to team Been There Done That on their trivia victory 🙂

There were also several contests to win conference t-shirts, and it got pretty competitive!

The banquet took place Saturday evening.  As people began to arrive, groups were taken out for a tour of Ohio State’s football stadium.  I have been to some pretty big stadiums, but I was amazed by how big this stadium was!

The banquet began with a speaker for the banquet’s sponsor, Marathon.

Dr. Umit Ozkan was the keynote speaker, and her story was truly inspirational.  She spoke of her journey as an engineer and gave some wonderful advice, which all related to the theme of “Engineering Around the World.”  On the topic of global engieering, she said that “In spite of our differences, we are very much the same as human beings.”

After the keynote speaker was the awards portion of the banquet.  Among the awards was the Region G GEM award, given to Mary Ann Walsh.  In her speech she told us that “Aspire, Advance, and Achieve is a cycle, and you also have to ask.”  In the closing remarks, it was announced that the 2015 Region G Conference will be hosted by West Virginia University.

  1. What a great summary of the Region Conference – it was a great weekend of inspiring speakers, informative sessions, and making new friends! Every time I see those photos of the career fair it reminds me of our twitter race for a free t-shirt! Great memories!
